Fall in Indiana is wonderful! The weather is gorgeous and there are so many fun things to do. Here are 3 don’t miss Fall events in Indy. If all you manage this season are these three, you can call this Fall a win!
Indy is blessed with a wonderful zoo, and one of the BEST programs that they put on each year is ZooBoo. Every year, it becomes a little bit bigger and better. In addition to the fun of just visiting a zoo, when you visit ZooBoo you’ll get to participate in extra fun activities.
There is trick-or-treating around the plains. You’ll find several fun ZooBoo areas with special drinks and treats. Face painting is available. We’ve always had fun with the pumpkin bowling and lately the mirror maze too. One of our favorite things to do during ZooBoo is riding the carousel – it goes backward!
ZooBoo starts in early October and runs through Halloween. It’s open Thursday through Sunday from 2 – 7 (9PM on Friday and Saturday) and is part of the normal zoo admission. Kids love to dress up (and adults too) so be prepared to see some fun costumes.
Insider tip: Weekdays tend to be less crowded, as do the dates earlier in the month, so if you can plan your visit for those times, it’ll be a little easier to get around the zoo.
Russell Farms Pumpkin Patch
Open every weekend through the end of October, Russell Farms is the perfect pumpkin patch adventure. Not only will you be able to find the perfect pumpkin (and take a hayride out to pick it out), but there are enough fun activities to fill up an entire day!
Visiting the animals is a perpetual favorite, but Russell Farms has also added bounce houses and slides, pedal carts, playgrounds and more. Little kids will be worn out by the end of the day.
For the older crew, enjoy miniature golf, tasty treats, and TWO corn mazes. Every year the farm adds something new to check out. If you are looking for fall family pictures, this is a fantastic place to get some. Admission is per person and covers all the activities. It does cost extra to purchase pumpkins, snacks, and souvenirs. If a fun fall day is what you are looking for, Russell Farms is a definite must.
Conner Prairie’s Headless Horseman
Conner Prairie’s Headless Horseman is by far my favorite fall event. It only runs for the last three weekends in October (Thursday – Sunday), so plan accordingly. The event starts at 6:00 and unless you have a donor level membership, the hayride is first come, first serve. The lines can get really long, so if you have littles who would be scared in the dark, make sure to arrive early so they can ride on the wagons when it’s still light out.
Insider tip: The headless horseman can be pretty pricey so if you think your family would enjoy visiting Conner Prairie again throughout the year (and I highly recommend it), consider purchasing an annual pass – it’s a fantastic deal and will give you plenty of additional fun outings for the next twelve months!
In addition to being “chased” by the headless horseman on the hayride, you’ll find all kinds of other activities. Must do’s include the puppet show in the big barn – kids especially find this hilarious. There are also magic shows as well as other fun monster-themed shows throughout the night – all kid-friendly, but make sure to look at times as soon as you arrive so you won’t miss the ones you want to see.
Fall Events In Indy
There are plenty of Fall treats to be had, around the grounds as well as in the Apple Store. Typically there are also a few fun crafts geared towards preschool and elementary school-aged kids. My biggest tip for this event is to dress appropriately. Even on a beautiful fall day, it can get quite a bit colder after dark, and being cold will put a damper on all the fun.
Hopefully, you’ll get a chance to experience some of these fun fall events around Indy this year. What are your fall must-do’s?
